How to Find Fish – Bass Fishing

Here are the basics on how I find fish on any given day without going into seasonal patterns.

How To Cure Fish Ich

Fish ich is probably one of the most common fish diseases among aquarium fishes. But how much do we really know about this disease?

The term Ich is a simplified form of Ichthyophthirius which is a type of ciliated protozoa. Similar to germs in the air, Ich is always present in fish tank water although in small quatity. But when the immunity level of the fish is significantly lowered probably because of stress or sudden drops in temperature that they become vulnerable and are afflicted. Another very common way that Ich can spread rapidly is when a new fish is placed into the fish tank with your other fish.

Ich swims freely in the water until it finds its victim and attaches itself to the fish. It is easy to notice Ich even under low microscope resolution, looking like a round mass. Once it happens upon its victim, it will attach itself to the host’s skins outer layer. When this happens, it wil begin to form a hard cystic like shell and feeds on the bodily fluids of the fish. These cysts can be seen by the naked eye, looking like white specks and after spreading more, it makes it appear as if the fish is covered in salt. Upon maturity, the cysts will pop and the parasites drop off the fish, falling onto the gravel, ornaments, plants and anything else.

At this stage they will begin to reproduce into the free swimming Ich that starts its cycle all over again.

Ich exists in nature but because of the ratio of water to fish, it does not cause much damage. But in an enclosed system like a fish tank where there usually is more fish than allowable, this causes infections that can be truly severe.

A very important fact to remember when treating fish ich is that while it is in its cyst bubble, it is shielded from any medication so treating it then is a waste of time, it is after it has falen from the cyst and is free swimming that it can be killed easily. Usually the fish ich life cycle takes approximately three days so to effectively heal the fish you would have to treat them for four to seven days.

Instead of using harsh medication like what many aquarists do, there are more natural ways for you to conduct your treatment as follows:

The first thing you can do is to increase the temperature of the water to between 85 to 88 degrees, since ich do not reproduce well in warmer water.

The next thing to do is to increase the aeration in the water by adding air stones so that there will be more oxygen for the fish. Fish ich also infects the gills thus limiting the ability of the fish to breathe.

Thirdly, add one teaspoon of canning and pickling salt to each gallon of water to reduce the osmotic pressure. This helps the immunity system of the fish to effective combat the ich. The salt in the water is also deadly to the ich.

Fourthly, do half tank water changes everyday. This removes a big amount of the free swimming ich. Water changes are extremely important in fighting ich outbreaks. Also vacumm the gravel every two days.

Finally, while I would prefer not use chemicals as much as possible, if the fish ich persists use a proper treatment specific for ich such as Rid-Ich which available at most fish shops.

Once your fish have won the batlle against ich, they generally develop an immunity to it and will be resistent to further outbreaks. But to ensure that it does not happen again, simple fish tank maintenance will do wonders and changing the water regularly is essential. Also, always quarantine fish that you have just bought for a couple of weeks before adding it to your established aquarium, no irregardless of how healthy the fish may seem.

Improving Skills On Boat Building

Do you know about building and constructing a boat? It is considered as one of the oldest branches of engineering that have been handed down from generation to generation. It is an engineering feat and a specialised profession. It is not easy or simple to build a boat such as you accordingly construct using the right materials with every body parts of the boat.

Constructing boat means you will have to concentrate on its hulls for sailboats, the masts, spars and rigging. Following are the components that you will have to concentrate on your boat building mission.

Boat Components

Side view of the wooden frame Bow: The front and generally sharp end of the hull.

Bulkhead: The internal walls of the hull

Chines: Are long, longitudinal strips on hydroplaning hulls that deflect downwards the spray that is produced by the hull when it travels at speed in the water.

Deck: It is the top surface of the hull and helps to keeps water and weather out of the hull allowing the crew to stand safely and operate the boat more easily.

Garboard: Strake immediately adjacent to the keel.

Gunwale: An upper longitudinal structural member of the hull.

Keel: Main central member along the length of the bottom of the boat. It has a strong influence on its turning performance. It resists the sideways pressure of the wind in sailing boats.

Keelson: This is an internal beam fixed to the top of the keel to strengthen the joint of the upper members of the boat to the keel

Rudder: This is a steering device at the rear of the hull.

Sheer: Generally curved shape of the top of the hull and traditionally lowest amidships to maximize freeboard at the ends of the hull.

Stem: The keel’s continuation upwards at the front of the hull

Stern: The boat’s back.

Strake: A strip of material running longitudinally along the vessel’s side, bilge or bottom.

Transom: Wide, flat, sometimes vertical board at the rear of the hull.

Construction materials

Caulking Irons And Oakum: This is a traditional boat building material used for hull and spar construction. It is widely available, cheap and easy to work on. This material is popular with amateur boat builder and is used for building small boats. Wooden boat’s hull consists of planking fastened to frames. Keel and frames are made of hardwoods such as oak but planking can either be of oak or softwood such as pine, larch or cedar. But amateur prefers Plywood constructing boats.

Some types of wood construction includes: (a) Carvel (b) Lapstrake(c) Strip planking (d) Sheet plywood (e) Cold-Molding.

Steel (Iron before): Used in sheet or alternatively for all-metal hulls or structural members. It is strong and 30 % heavier than aluminum. However unless it is protected from water by paint, it rust. It is also cheap and amateur boat builders prefer steel to build their boat.

The rope is a climber’s lifeline. It must be cared for and used properly. These general guidelines should be used when handling ropes.

a. Do not step on or drag ropes on the ground unnecessarily. Small particles of dirt will be ground between the inner strands and will slowly cut them.

b. While in use, do not allow the rope to come into contact with sharp edges. Nylon rope is easily cut, particularly when under tension. If the rope must be used over a sharp edge, pad the edge for protection.

c. Always keep the rope as dry as possible. Should the rope become wet, hang it in large loops off the ground and allow it to dry. Never dry a rope with high heat or in direct sunlight.

d. Never leave a rope knotted or tightly stretched for longer than necessary. Over time it will reduce the strength and life of the rope.

e. Never allow one rope to continuously rub over or against another. Allowing rope-on-rope contact with nylon rope is extremely dangerous because the heat produced by the friction will cause the nylon to melt.

f. Inspect the rope before each use for frayed or cut spots, mildew or rot, or defects in construction (new rope).

g. The ends of the rope should be whipped or melted to prevent unraveling.

h. Do not splice ropes for use in mountaineering.

i. Do not mark ropes with paints or allow them to come in contact with oils or petroleum products. Some of these will weaken or deteriorate nylon.

j. Never use a mountaineering rope for any purpose except mountaineering.

k. Each rope should have a corresponding rope log…

l. Never subject the rope to high heat or flame. This will significantly weaken it.

m. All ropes should be washed periodically to remove dirt and grit, and rinsed thoroughly…

n. Ultraviolet radiation (sunlight) tends to deteriorate nylon over long periods of time. This becomes important if rope installations are left in place over a number of months.

o. When not in use, ropes should be loosely coiled and hung on wooden pegs rather than nails or other metal objects. Storage areas should be relatively cool with low humidity levels to prevent mildew or rotting. Rope may also be loosely stacked and placed in a rope bag and stored on a shelf. Avoid storage in direct sunlight, as the ultraviolet radiation will deteriorate the nylon over long periods…

When using ropes, understanding basic terminology is important. The terms explained in this section are the most commonly used in military mountaineering.

a. Bight. A bight of rope is a simple bend of rope in which the rope does not cross itself.

b. Loop. A loop is a bend of a rope in which the rope does cross itself.

c. Half Hitch. A half hitch is a loop that runs around an object in such a manner as to lock or secure itself.

d. Turn. A turn wraps around an object, providing 360-degree contact.

e. Round Turn. A round turn wraps around an object one and one-half times. A round turn is used to distribute the load over a small diameter anchor (3 inches or less). It may also be used around larger diameter anchors to reduce the tension on the knot, or provide added friction.

f. Running End. A running end is the loose or working end of the rope.

g. Standing Part. The standing part is the static, stationary, or nonworking end of the rope.

h. Lay. The lay is the direction of twist used in construction of the rope.

i. Pigtail. The pigtail (tail) is the portion of the running end of the rope between the safety knot and the end of the rope.

j. Dress. Dress is the proper arrangement of all the knot parts, removing unnecessary kinks, twists, and slack so that all rope parts of the knot make contact.

Shore Fishing Tips

Shore fishing is a great sport and a fun way to spend the day fishing. It is fairly easy to do and not complicated, in fact it is one of the easier ways to fish that there is. In this article I am going to give you a few tips on how you can make shore fishing more fun for you and your family.

Location
The location at where you plan to spend you day fishing is very important. Although you will be limited as to where you can go seeing as you do not have a boat, you can still choose from a few number of spots as to where you can go fishing. Ideally, you will want a location where there is lots of rocks, and weeds. This may be a problem for some people as they are afraid that they may get a few snags and lose their lures, but this is where most of the fish are. If you want to find the fish you need to look for sport as to where they will be.

Lures
The recommended lure to use for shore fishing depends on what you are fishing for. Bass tend to love Crankbaits, while Walleye will go for jigs and Powerbaits more. You can always experiment but usually these are a good basis to start from.

Time of Day
If you plan on going fishing from the shore, try to go ether in the early morning or in the late evening. These are the best times for fishing as this is their usual feeding time. If you are having trouble with shore fishing, then try out some of these tips and see if any of them work for you. The best way to go about this is to keep trying new things. If one thing isn’t working then leave it be and try something else. If you do this, you are guaranteed to find something that will work for you eventually. In the long run this means that you can expect to catch a lot more fish on your future fishing trips.
