How To Breed Discus Fish

If just maintaining healthy Discus in an aquarium is a challenge successfully breeding them and keeping the fry alive is even more so. Discus are fussy about their mating partners so just throwing any two opposite gender fish in a tank won’t do it. They are selective.

Out of a group of eight Discus perhaps only two will pair up. A signal that the pair is ready to spawn is when you see them nipping the glass of the aquarium. Remove the pair to a breeding tank. A nearly vertical surface like a vertical tube or rock should be in the tank. The female will lay from 100 to 200 eggs on the vertical surface and the male will follow her fertilizing the eggs. Both the male and the female will guard the eggs not allowing other fish to come near. After 2-3 days the fry will hatch. Occasionally you will one or both of the parents nibbling at the eggs in an attempt to help the fry hatch.

The parents will move the fry to another area of the tank by mouthing them. They will attach the fry to this new area by sticky filaments. Baby Discus are not good swimmers. The fry feed on a mucous secreted by the parents skin, not exactly mother’s milk but it seems to work for the Discus. In 4 or 5 days the fry will be attached to the parents by the filaments and continue to feed off the secretion. In about 10 days the fry should be removed to their own tank and fed commercial food.

Discus can be fostered but it’s an involved process. After the eggs have been fertilized by the male, the surface and the eggs of course should be removed to a one gallon jar that is placed in a five gallon tank that has been filled with water from the breeding tank. The jar and the small tank should be exactly the same temperature as the breeding tank. The small tank should have filter and heater and maintain a temperature of 88 degrees F. The jar should have an air stone placed in it to maintain a current.

The eggs should hatch in 2 to 3 days and the babies start free swimming in 3 to 4 days. Now comes the challenge. The water must be changed and the fish fed every 4 to 6 hours. The water in the tank is used to change the water in the jar. The temperature of both the tank and the jar will be exactly the same. Clean water changes of 90% and the water at the same temperature is critical to the success of raising the fry.

You’ve spotted the boat of your dreams at a boatshow, boat shop, fishing show(or was it in your neighbor’s driveway?) and you’re ready to buy. Before you plunk down a sizeable amount of change, there are a number of factors you should consider. First, you’ll need to determine the type of boating you will be doing. This may seem an obvious starting point, but you’d be surprised how many buyers purchase a boat that doesn’t fit their needs. The type of water you will be boating on and the climate are other important considerations. Small, sheltered bodies of water don’t require a boat with as much freeboard and deadrise as those used on larger bodies of water where you will encounter bigger waves and rougher conditions. In a colder climate, the boating season is relatively short. To prolong it you may want a boat that offers more protection from the elements. In warmer climates an open boat with a Bimini top for shade may be the better choice.

Buy a New Boat or Used

A used boat will cost less than a new one and often comes better equipped, but there may be added expense in repairs and upgrades. However, new boats depreciate the moment they leave the showroom floor. Buying new may be viewed as less of a risk to financial institutions, so terms, interest rate and down payment requirements may be better. One important tip is to check the seller’s proof of ownership. If the price is a “steal,” the boat may very well be stolen. So check the necessary documents, and if they can’t be produced, beware. Once you pass that hurdle, it’s time to inspect the boat. A primary concern on a used power boat is its engine. A boat engine has to work much harder than its automotive counterpart, so pay special attention to its condition. If you are not mechanically astute, it is best to have a mechanical technician check the engine before you commit to a sale. This is especially critical if the boat has been used in salt water, which is much more corrosive than fresh water. How to Trailer a Boat

Unless you live in a lakeside home, towing your boat to the water is the first step in a fun-filled day in the sun. Trailering a boat requires close attention to the safety requirements of your vehicle and trailer. Taking shortcuts by avoiding what seems like a minor safety precaution could end in costly damage. Get to the water safe and sound by following these basic safety tips.

For starters, check the towing capacity of your vehicle by consulting the owner’s manual or by contacting the manufacturer. Never assume your vehicle can pull the weight of your boat and trailer without checking the manufacturer’s rated towing capacity. Also note that the capacity of your vehicle depends on a combination of factors, not just the size of the engine. Total up the combined weight of your boat and trailer to find the total towing load, and don’t forget to factor in the weight of the motor, fuel, and equipment that you keep in your boat.

In order to hook up your boat properly, the coupler and ball hitch must be the same size. Don’t try to mix and match sizes. If the ball hitch is too small, the coupler could bounce loose on the road. After you secure the hitch, cross the safety chains underneath the trailer tongue and attach them to the hitch receiver. If the coupler fails, the chains will prevent the trailer from dragging on the ground or separating from the tow vehicle. Make sure your boat is securely tied down. Secure the bow to the trailer with a ratchet strap or chain. Never depend on the winch line alone to secure the bow.

A thorough safety check before taking off can prevent a lot of hassle in the long run. An easy way to prevent one of the most common causes of roadside emergencies is proper tire care. Low tire pressure can cause overheating or result in a blowout. After checking the pressure, examine the sidewalls and tread for cracks and wear. Check the spare on your trailer as well. If you neglect the spare, it won’t do you any good when you’re in a pinch and need it. Use a spare tire cover to protect it from the elements and keep it in good condition.

Ask another person to help you check the lights on your tow vehicle and trailer, including brake lights, turn signals, and running lights. Double-check the coupler and safety chains before towing. The trailer tongue should be parallel to the ground on a flat surface. If it slopes up or down, adjust the hitch or redistribute the load. The weight of the boat should be distributed evenly from front to rear and side to side. An uneven load could cause the trailer to bounce or sway as you drive down the road.

If you ever plan to tow a trailer for any activities such as boating, camping or moving, it may seem scary. Towing an average-sized trailer is really easier than it looks.

Two of the most important things to have when you tow are a vehicle that can tow the load, this does not include gas/electric hybrid cars as they don’t have towing capacity and the proper hitch.

Trailer hitches are rated according to capacity of the load weight and tongue weight. Load weight is the Gross Trailer Weight and tongue weight is the downward force exerted on the hitch ball. If this sounds confusing, don’t guess, but get help from a local towing center or RV/camping center. They can get your the correct hitch for your vehicle.

Many pickups and SUVs come factory-equipped with a Class III hitch, which is the most popular class of hitch. Most hitches bolt to the vehicle and some are welded. A bolt on installation is the method preferred for attachment.

For hauling any heavier load (car, boat, or camper), a Class III hitch can handle up to 5,000 pounds. All Class III and above hitches are made up of two basic parts. The receiver part of the hitch is what actually attaches to the tow vehicle.

The hitch is bolted (or welded) to the vehicle chassis. The receiver is a large square tube that accepts a drawbar. The drawbar is a smaller square tube that slides into the receiver and contains the trailer ball. The drawbar is fastened to the receiver with a pin that slides through both pieces and is held in place with a clip. Drawbars come in a variety of heights to allow the trailer to ride at a level plane.

For heavier boats or campers, a Class IV hitch (up to 7,500 pounds) would be required and you might want to consider a three-quarter ton truck at this point as well as electric trailer brakes and tow bars. Some trucks have electric brake controllers installed with a towing package from the factory.

Every state has different rules and regulations for towing a trailer. At a minimum, all trailers need to have working taillights and brake lights and that most states require registration of the trailer with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Tautog Fishing Tips

Tautog, also know as Blackfish, are extremely tough fighters and very sneaky fish that can be difficult to catch. However, they are great on the dinner table.  We will go over some useful information about how to catch these fish.

Anchor Retrieval System
A good anchor system uses two ropes, one attached to the front of the anchor, and the usual anchor rope attached to the back of the anchor.  The rope attached to the front should have a small buoy on it. When you drop the anchor make sure the ropes don’t wrap each other, as this will defeat the purpose of the second rope.  When it comes time to pull the anchor up, motor up carefully to the buoy, bringing in the other rope as you approach, then grap the buoy and pull the anchor in the rest of the way using the buoy rope.  This pulls the anchor from the front, pulling it right out o the bottom and any rocks it may have been stuck under. 

Boat Handling

It is necessary to anchor the boat over the rocky structure that Tautog prefer.  This can sometimes be very difficult, if you don’t get over the structure you wont be catching any fish.  Once you get the boat anchored, remember that an area can be fished out, so it is necessary to let out anchor line as you fish to cover new ground.  Make sure that you are anchored so that letting out line wll still place you over structure.

Tautog like to hide among rock piles and it isn’t unusual to lose a lot of rigs when fishing for them.  We use a very simple rig which helps reduce the loss of tackle to a minimum.  A simple monofilament leader with a loop is tied onto the line and then a hook with a leader is tied to this length of mono leader, with the hook able to hang down to the level of the loop.  Then we tie a small loop with 12lb test mono, these are used to attach the sinker to the leader loop.  This lighter sinker loop will break before the main leader does, and it is the sinker that often gets hung up with this rig, since it hangs down below the hook.  This way you usually only lose sinkers.


We use crabs for bait.  It is easy for us to catch them at the dock and is doesn’t matter what kind they are (except for spider crabs, we don’t use them). Most of the time we remove the legs, claws, and cut the crab in half, then remove the upper shell before placing it on the hook.  If it is a very large crab we will cut the halves in half and use quarters

Let your baited rig down to the bottom.  It is necessary to keep the line tight so you may feel the hit, otherwise the bait can be lost with no clue to the fact that there was a bite.  If the boat is swinging back and forth, do not let the rig drag across the bottom, this will hang it up for sure.  Always lift it off the bottom and let it back down as the boat moves. Banging the sinker on the bottom will make noise which can bring the tautog in to investigate.

The Bite

With Tautog, you will often feel the tap-tap-taps and will want to instantly try to set the hook.  This does not usually work, you need to wait until you feel the taps become tugs, then try setting the hook.  If the fish is hooked, get him away from the bottom as quickly as you can so he can’t get hung up in the rocks.  Remember not to lift the head out of the water as you try to net the fish, this is a good way to lose him.

When to Fish
In the fall when the tautog bite is really on you can catch a lot of fish, and they can be pretty easy to hook.  During the spring and summer, they are not so aggressive and tautog fishing can be somewhat frustrating.  Late October and early November are usually the best times to fish for them.  Time of day is not usually an issue, far more important is tide, which needs to be running for the bite to be on.  Slack tide in not usually very good.
