The Mariner 4 is a fabulous value. So firm and rigid. Not like single-ply inflatable boats that remain soft and floppy even when fully inflated. The firmness and rigidity make it great for use as a sailboat, which is possible by adding the SailboatsToGo sail kit made for the Mariner 4. Last February I actually flew to the Caribbean with my SailboatsToGo sail kit and a Mariner 4 and used them to sail all around Maho Bay on St. John. So great to have my own sailboat while on vacation.

There is nothing like the Mariner 4 if you want that 4-person capacity and a nice rigid and firm boat that accepts a motor and a sail kit. The Intex Excursion series is junk by comparison — way too soft and floppy. If you can live with just 3-person capacity then get the Mariner 3 (same as the Seahawk II, which is not to be confused with the Seahawk 2). The Mariner 3 is about half the weight of the 4. It does not have a rollup solid floor, and that saves 30 lbs right there. The Mariner 3 has a nice firm inflatable floor and it too accepts the SailboatsToGo sail kit, making a terrific portable sailboat in 2 bags.

Two tips for using the Mariner 4. First, don’t try to get both the floor and the rest of the hull back into the carrybag Intex provides. The two pieces (floor and inflatable hull) together are too heavy to be conveniently carried in one bag, and too bulky to get back into that bag easily. Get yourself a separate duffle bag for the floor and only use the Intex bag for the inflatable part of the boat. Amazon has suitable duffle bags. Get a duffle bag for the floor at least 42 inches long (the floor is 36 inches long when rolled up, but you need extra room to make it easy to get in and out) and say 18 inches in diameter (again, the floor might only be 14 inches in diameter when rolled, but you want extra room). You won’t have to pay more than $39. The second tip concerns the inflatable keel under the rigid floor. I’ve found the stopper valve tends to pop open due to the pressure of your weight on the floor. Then this chamber goes flat and you lose that nice V shape to the hull beneath the waterline. You don’t sink and you don’t stop, but you’ll notice it slows you down a bit. To prevent this from happening, push the valve in after you inflate this chamber and lay something over it that’s both thick and flexible (I used a heavy piece of vinyl fabric I happened to have, but you could use rubber from an old inner tube, or scrap leather from an upholstery shop) and position this between the air chamber and the underside of the roll-up floor, covering the opening through which you access the valve. This will keep the valve plug from popping out.

Oh yeah, people often wonder if the Mariner 4 can be used without the solid floor. Answer: No. There is a floor under the solid floor, but it’s just a tarp. You would would totally sink in.

I wanted a little boat take my wife and our two doggies on water adventures but I didn’t want to tow a trailer and store a larger boat so decided on an inflatable raft for quick weekend trips. After reading about rubbery and easily over-inflatable rafts that busted easily, I decided on the Intex Mariner 4 due to reviews describing the material as tough and stiff compared to the others. I figured our pups claws could easily puncture the cheaper ones. Indeed, I wasn’t disappointed. It does feel quite rigid and strong. What I love is that It packs into a duffel bag. As others have mentioned, it’s very heavy for a single bag so I split the load by putting the roll-up floor into another duffel. Do yourself a favor and get two sturdy duffel bags as others suggest as well.

There was just enough room for my wife and I, plus our two dogs and minimal gear (Ice Chest, back pack, towels, etc). Overall, I’m very happy with the purchase. We cut a piece of outdoor carpet to put on top of the roll-up floor just to give it a little more comfort and to keep the doggies claws from ripping up the vinyl. It also made it a little comfier to sit on the floor.

Overall, I love it! I’d recommend it to others looking for a tough little raft and I’d buy it again. I agree with all the others that believe this one provides the best quality and value for the price.

Minor complaints (not deal breakers but stuff to be aware of):

Wish there was just a tad more room. I wanted slightly more room that the Excursion 5 gives you but the higher-quality and tougher Mariner 4 won out.

The duffel bag is very thin and flimsy. For the weight that it has to support it should have been thick durable canvas instead of something that feels like paper. I feel it doesn’t provide any protection so will upgrade that immediately.

I would have preferred that the inflatable seats have the Boston Valves to make them easier to deflate. We didn’t take them out the first time which made the raft feel a bit roomier so I probably won’t use them much (if at all). I sat on the Ice Chest to get a better rowing angle.

There’s also no Boston Valve on the center keel so you have to pinch to deflate. I’m just sayin’, why not add those nifty Boston Valves everywhere – I would have paid extra.

The Oars worked but I had to keep tightening them at the joints. The grip-ends completely slid off at one point so I’ll be shopping around for replacements as I don’t see them lasting long.

It’s made in China. Just sayin’

    Additional Lessons and Updates:

    1) If you are hand-carrying to the water, splitting the load into two duffels is essential. This makes it easier to carry and put away.

    2) One of the paddles broke after only the second use. One of the plastic retainer rings broke off and flew into the water. I periodically checked to make sure the rings were securely tightened so it wasn’t loose when it broke, it was nice and secure. That leads me to believe that it broke from stress though we were not rowing too hard. Shopping around for replacement options and calling Intex to see if they’ll replace.

    3) Added a Minn Kota Endura C2 40 Freshwater Transom Mounted Trolling Motor (36″ Shaft) and a Intex Motor Mount Kit to the mix. This added another 26 pounds of weight to carry. Of course this requires a battery [EverStart Maxx Marine 24DC] to run it so add another 45 pounds for the battery. Lets not forget the That’s a total of 71 additional pounds to carry to the water which brings me to the next lesson.

    4) Added a Farm & Ranch FR110-2 Steel Utility Cart with Removable Folding Sides and 10-Inch Pneumatic Tires, 400-Pound Capacity, 34-Inches by 18-Inches, Green Finish because of the now good-workout 4 round trips from vehicle to water (a) Bag one with raft and small gear (b) Bag 2 with floor, paddles and other gear (c) Trolling Motor and Ice Chest and (d) The 45lb Marine Battery. That reduced to one trip with the Utility Cart.

    5) Added a Minn Kota Trolling Motor Power Center which only added one more pound. It’s a really nice enclosure for the battery that powers the trolling motor and it has a built-in power meter and accessory plugs.

    6) The cost of additional accessories can quickly add up. So far totally worth…

This is a good boat for two people fishing, love it., July 16, 2013

This review is from: Intex Mariner 4, 4-Person Inflatable Boat Set with Aluminum Oars and High Output Air Pump (Sports)
My wife and I have used this boat for fishing on medium size lakes and love this thing. We are still learning but so far we have just had the best time with this because of the ease of use and not dealing with anything as far as maintenance usually required for other boats (not to mention other needs, such as trailers, etc). Here is what our setup is and has worked great:
    – Have the motor mount with 40lb thrust trolling motor, no problems. The trolling motor is usually run at 3 out of 5 speeds but handles any speed. When installing the mount, the arms should be separated from unit so this can be installed at any inflation level, so just connect arms to mount last. Also, make sure the motor is at highest level when attaching it so that handle will go across the inflatable.
    – Use the deep cell battery (got from advance auto using $40 off orders of $100 or more with store pickup; battery was normally $105. Look online and find at least this kind of deal. Also order second battery for car using same code, spouses name. That battery was 95, but we added 5 dollar something to get the $40 off). Battery fits perfect in board floor board, but did not use battery pouch.
    – Got copa beach chairs from walmart and fit these across the inflatable seat, with legs across floor slats. Gives seat back for better comfort, and these seats have bottom straps that can wrap around inflatable seat for stability and they won’t sink if something were to go wrong.
    – For space savings, got type 3 pfd and they hang onto back of seat (hang backwards) without taking up space in other parts of the boat. So if something were to go wrong just hold on to seat that has pfd and inflatable seat for floatation.
    – We don’t use the oaring system, so we only use one oar for small moves we may have to make (and only use the end of the oar that has about 2 feet of handle, this can be used by itself to get us most places, if there were a need).
    – Use nylon rope in one of the outside rope retainers for weight. Nylon rope will thread through retainer with the rope installed on the boat with no problem. This works great using two weights (about 8 pounds each) on counter ends/sides.
    – Fishing rod holders were not big enough for holding our rods, so took end pieces off the boat (we tried to take every ounce we could off the boat, see oars above).
    – If we have less than 10 miles to lake, we usually inflate at home, load into pickup and use couple of straps to hold down. Get to lake unload, hook up motor, grab other fishing items and in water in 2 minutes.

This is so easy to set up, plenty of room for two for fishing, 3 if just on water.
We have had no issues with anything and no complaints or dislikes. Works perfect for us.
