Returned cause unable to register boat with state, March 16, 2012

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: KL Industries American 12 Jon Fishing Boat (Sports)
I purchased this boat and it arrived in a very expeditious manner. However, I received two manufacture statement of origins (MSO), one of which was blank, and the other was blank minus a stamped signature from a person at Amazon named Nathan Allen (never figured out who he is). When I presented this to the state of Florida tag office to register the boat, they said this paperwork is absolutely incomplete. They said Allen needed to sign the MSO, and I must provide a receipt with a VIN and price.

Well, I called the manufacturer KL Industries for help. I rapidly learned they don’t answer or retrun calls, but they do answer emails. Their response to me was the tag agency is wrong, and the person working with me was to strict. Go back and ask for a different representative; I started laughing when she told me this. it was the worst customer service advise that I ever received. She also told me KL would not assist with a completed MSO and receipt. I explained that all I needed was a MSO with a VIN and signature, and the KL customer service representative said, “No.” Yes, I have her emails indicating this, and it is hilarious and disappointing.

My solution with Amazon, was simply to return the boat, which I did. My learning lesson is don’t buy a boat through Amazon. I can only speak for Florida, but it will be a disaster if you try to register it. Don’t waiste your time and money.

Good for small lakes…but needs additions, June 28, 2010

Have had this boat for 3 years now. Price was good, clearance sale at Wally World.

    Pros:

Easy to load in truck or trailer.

Easy to tip over to clean.

    Durable

Easy to power up with electric trolling motor.

    Cons:

Formed seating is too low for comfort after extended hours. ( I installed swivel seat platforms and padded seats from Wally World that match the interior color of the boat perfectly. Looks like a small bass boat now )

Motor mounts compress excessively due to temperature so one has to ensure that the motor clamps are tightened periodically.

No cleats installed and since this is a “poly” boat, no dependable adhesive to attach. Resorted to “toggle” bolts.

Battery placements are fine if your battery is small. Marine size batteries are a bit long.

Built in rod holders are better suited to uprights for a top of some sort and not fishing rods. Too erect, with no angle towards the stern or port/starboard.

No offset stern motor mount for electric trolling motor like what is on the bow.

Overall, not a bad little boat. I’ll be selling mine when my wood boat is completed.

    BAD BAD experience . . ., October 8, 2012

First, let me say that I think the boat looks the way I thought it would (the pictures are accurate). It’s pretty much what I expected and can’t wait to get it in the water. Secondly, the shipping was first rate. CEVA did a fantastic job and EVERYONE I spoke with there was extremely nice.

Now the BAD, BAD part. The boat arrived with 2 MSO’S. One completely blank, and the other one with some hand written information on it, and a couple of rubber stamped things that are absolutely UNacceptable to my state for registration purposes. It is my understanding from my state that an MSO MUST be filled in by the MANUFACTURER and it MUST include the HIN (hull identification number), manufacturer, length, model, year, maximum horsepower rating, etc, and that this is a FEDERAL REQUIREMENT. I received NONE of this. At this point, I have been in contact with Amazon (VERY nice) and they are attempting to assist me with getting this straightened out post haste. In fairness to Amazon, they have offered to accept a return on this boat and refund my money. It’s NOT Amazon’s fault, and I want to be sure this is understood. At this point, I cannot express my frustration in acceptable language regarding this transaction. I will update this as soon as I have more information.

As a footnote: I sent SEVERAL emails to the manufacturer with questions prior to ordering this boat – I received NO response from them. It seems to me that this may NOT be the kind of company that Amazon may want to continue to associate with considering their (Amazon’s) EXCELLENT reputation. I should have paid heed to the reviews BEFORE I ordered this boat. Oh well . .. hindsight . . .

UPDATE: Sarah and Hillary at Amazon have been FANTASTIC in helping me resolve my issues. They have made this a personal issue and have gotten results. I FINALLY got a call from the manufacturer and, to be as nice as possible, I’ve gotten better attitude at the DMV. The lady did everything she could to AVOID sending me a PROPER MSO. After some friendly persuasion on my part, she agreed to send me one (which she did) but not before arguing that my state doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Again, I wonder if Amazon would want to continue with a company like this.

I am also told by my state that ALL states are really getting “stiff” about PROPER MSO’s and that it will be increasingly difficult to get a boat titled and registered without this all important paper. BEWARE. These are FEDERAL regulations with which the states are simply complying.

I am putting the boat in the water this coming Monday and will further update when I return.

FURTHER UPDATE: I’m going to stick with my ONE star rating on the boat. It floats, but that’s about all I can say for it. It is NOT as stable as I thought it would be and I think the load rating of just over 400# is, perhaps, a bit generous on the manufacturers part. It is rated for a 6 hp motor. I put on a 9.5 (which runs PERFECTLY) and was EXTREMELY disappointed that, despite my best efforts, I could NOT get the boat up on a plane (something wrong???). When I first put it in the water, it started taking on water because one of the drains was not tight (and I thought is SHOULD have been – right from the factory. . . ). There are a lot of things in the boat that are NOT well thought out: Rod holders (junk afterthought) , floor space, seat width, cup holders (really???), and other similar things. I guess I got what I paid for. I will NOT be a long term owner of this boat. In the boats favor, it is light enough that 2 people can easily load, unload, and float it.

I have read the reviews with people putting it in the ocean, etc and I think they are FOOLS. This boat is NOT well built. It’s a cheap plastic boat that’s worth about what they’re selling it for, if not less. The craftsmanship is mediocre (I mean no offense to those who have said the boat is a good piece of craftsmanship), and I think Wal Mart would be a good outlet for this boat.

I think my best advice for anyone considering this boat is “pass on it.” It probably is NOT what you’re expecting and the manufacturer is a COMPLETE pain to deal with. Spend a little more and get a real boat (like I wish I had). Overall, this was a BAD experience and I would not, knowingly, deal with KL industries again. If you’re looking for a boat for a SMALL pond, this would work. If you’re looking for a boat for bigger bodies of water, keep looking.

uPDATE: I’ve had this boat for some time now. No matter what I do, the boat remains as unstable as a narrow canoe . . . DO NOT TRY TO STAND UP IN IT!! The wrapping on the gunwale has started to come off and the boat warps easily with the heat we have here in southern Nevada. I had to use contact cement to get the state decals and registration numbers to stick. I am about as completely disappointed in this boat as I…
