How to Buy a Boat

How to Buy a Boat Tactics for ensuring a successful purchase. You’ve spotted the boat of your dreams at a boatshow, boat shop, fishing show(or was it in your neighbor’s driveway?) and you’re ready to buy. Before you plunk down a sizeable amount of change, there are a number of factors you should consider. First, you’ll need to determine the type of boating you will be doing. This may seem an obvious starting point, but you’d be surprised how many buyers purchase a boat that doesn’t fit their needs. The type of water you will be boating on and the climate are other important considerations. Small, sheltered bodies of water don’t require a boat with as much freeboard and deadrise as those used on larger bodies of water where you will encounter bigger waves and rougher conditions. In a colder climate, the boating season is relatively short. To prolong it you may want a boat that offers more protection from the elements. In warmer climates an open boat with a Bimini top for shade may be the better choice.

Buy a New Boat or Used

(How to Buy a Boat|fishing|Boat Shop) Once you have determined the type of boat that suits your needs, the next decision is whether to buy it new or used. A used boat will cost less than a new one and often comes better equipped, but there may be added expense in repairs and upgrades. A used boat also has a proven performance and reliability track record that can be researched. On the other hand, a new boat comes with a full warranty. However, new boats depreciate the moment they leave the showroom floor. Buying new may be viewed as less of a risk to financial institutions, so terms, interest rate and down payment requirements may be better. If you decide to go with a new boat, boat shows are a prime shopping ground. Side-by-side comparisons permit you to evaluate several competing models at one location. You can also look for “Boat Show Specials” and negotiate deals between competing manufacturers. However, consideration should be given to the dealer you buy from. If he is located hundreds of miles away from where you live or if does not have a service shop, these “specials” may not be such a bargain. One good tip when shopping for new boats is to do it at the end of the model year. Typically toward the end of July dealers are trying to clear out old inventory. Another good tip is to search out the previous model year’s leftovers once the new models have arrived. If you opt to purchase a used boat, your shopping can be done by browsing classified ads found in newspapers, magazines and on numerous websites, including boats.com. Many dealerships also offer used boats that have been taken as trade-ins. A dealership may offer a limited warranty on the used boat and has likely serviced it to some extent in readying it for resale. But because the dealer is a third party and has overhead, including sales commissions, the price is generally higher than what you would pay the owner directly.

Research First for boat shop

Once you have found a used boat that interests you, it is wise to call the U.S. Coast Guard at (800) 368-5647 and ask for information about manufacturers’ recalls for that particular model. If a recall has been issued, ask the owner if the repair has been performed. If not, find out if the period of recall is still in effect. One important tip is to check the seller’s proof of ownership. If the price is a “steal,” the boat may very well be stolen. So check the necessary documents, and if they can’t be produced, beware. Once you pass that hurdle, it’s time to inspect the boat. A primary concern on a used power boat is its engine. A boat engine has to work much harder than its automotive counterpart, so pay special attention to its condition. If you are not mechanically astute, it is best to have a mechanical technician check the engine before you commit to a sale. This is especially critical if the boat has been used in salt water, which is much more corrosive than fresh water. But even a cursory check of the following items will provide some clue as to the engine’s health. Visit a Boat Show Visit a local boat show. Take a look at all available options and board as many boats as you can. Discuss your wants and needs with dealers and experts at the boat show; they will answer any questions you may have about specific boat types and help you choose the one that will fit your needs and desires. For a list of boat and sportsshows in your area, poease visit our Boat Show Calendar Visit a Dealer If you’re in the market for a boat, boat dealers are a great resource. Purchasing a boat from a dealer offers a number of advantages, including: • access to multiple finance sources and/or special manufacturer and dealer finance programs • year-round service departments • extended warranty programs • manufacturer and dealer incentive programs We also recommend buying from Marine Industry Certified dealers. Learn more about certified dealers in you area Rent a Boat Renting is a great way to compare boat types and models before deciding which boat to buy. Boat rentals come in a variety of forms, from hourly and daily rentals to weeks-long charters. Rental operations may not offer a wide range of boat models, but they can provide a range of boat types for you to try. Rental fleets tend toward basic models, nevertheless, they can give you and your family a sample of the boating fun waiting for you on the water, and they are a great way to get your feet wet. How to Trailer a Boat

Unless you live in a lakeside home, towing your boat to the water is the first step in a fun-filled day in the sun. Trailering a boat requires close attention to the safety requirements of your vehicle and trailer. Taking shortcuts by avoiding what seems like a minor safety precaution could end in costly damage. Get to the water safe and sound by following these basic safety tips.

For starters, check the towing capacity of your vehicle by consulting the owner’s manual or by contacting the manufacturer. Never assume your vehicle can pull the weight of your boat and trailer without checking the manufacturer’s rated towing capacity. Also note that the capacity of your vehicle depends on a combination of factors, not just the size of the engine. Total up the combined weight of your boat and trailer to find the total towing load, and don’t forget to factor in the weight of the motor, fuel, and equipment that you keep in your boat.

In order to hook up your boat properly, the coupler and ball hitch must be the same size. Don’t try to mix and match sizes. If the ball hitch is too small, the coupler could bounce loose on the road. After you secure the hitch, cross the safety chains underneath the trailer tongue and attach them to the hitch receiver. If the coupler fails, the chains will prevent the trailer from dragging on the ground or separating from the tow vehicle. Make sure your boat is securely tied down. Secure the bow to the trailer with a ratchet strap or chain. Never depend on the winch line alone to secure the bow.

A thorough safety check before taking off can prevent a lot of hassle in the long run. An easy way to prevent one of the most common causes of roadside emergencies is proper tire care. Low tire pressure can cause overheating or result in a blowout. After checking the pressure, examine the sidewalls and tread for cracks and wear. Check the spare on your trailer as well. If you neglect the spare, it won’t do you any good when you’re in a pinch and need it. Use a spare tire cover to protect it from the elements and keep it in good condition.

Ask another person to help you check the lights on your tow vehicle and trailer, including brake lights, turn signals, and running lights. Double-check the coupler and safety chains before towing. The trailer tongue should be parallel to the ground on a flat surface. If it slopes up or down, adjust the hitch or redistribute the load. The weight of the boat should be distributed evenly from front to rear and side to side. An uneven load could cause the trailer to bounce or sway as you drive down the road.

For added protection, use a trailerable boat cover and boat motor cover to keep out the elements and prevent your equipment from flying out on the road. With these safety tips in mind, you can trailer your boat with confidence and focus on having a fun, relaxing time on the water instead of worrying about breaking down on the side of the road.

If you ever plan to tow a trailer for any activities such as boating, camping or moving, it may seem scary. Towing an average-sized trailer is really easier than it looks.

Two of the most important things to have when you tow are a vehicle that can tow the load, this does not include gas/electric hybrid cars as they don’t have towing capacity and the proper hitch.

Trailer hitches are rated according to capacity of the load weight and tongue weight. Load weight is the Gross Trailer Weight and tongue weight is the downward force exerted on the hitch ball. If this sounds confusing, don’t guess, but get help from a local towing center or RV/camping center. They can get your the correct hitch for your vehicle.

Many pickups and SUVs come factory-equipped with a Class III hitch, which is the most popular class of hitch. Most hitches bolt to the vehicle and some are welded. A bolt on installation is the method preferred for attachment.

For hauling any heavier load (car, boat, or camper), a Class III hitch can handle up to 5,000 pounds. All Class III and above hitches are made up of two basic parts. The receiver part of the hitch is what actually attaches to the tow vehicle.

The hitch is bolted (or welded) to the vehicle chassis. The receiver is a large square tube that accepts a drawbar. The drawbar is a smaller square tube that slides into the receiver and contains the trailer ball. The drawbar is fastened to the receiver with a pin that slides through both pieces and is held in place with a clip. Drawbars come in a variety of heights to allow the trailer to ride at a level plane.

For heavier boats or campers, a Class IV hitch (up to 7,500 pounds) would be required and you might want to consider a three-quarter ton truck at this point as well as electric trailer brakes and tow bars. Some trucks have electric brake controllers installed with a towing package from the factory.

Every state has different rules and regulations for towing a trailer. At a minimum, all trailers need to have working taillights and brake lights and that most states require registration of the trailer with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Marlin Sinks Fishing Boat. Vessel Capsizes After Hooking Huge Fish [Reuploaded]

Marlin Sinks Fishing Boat. Vessel Capsizes After Hooking Huge Fish [Reuploaded]

[Reuploaded for Solving Music Copyrights Infringements]
The History:
A sport-fishing boat off the coast of Panama capsized last Thursday after someone aboard the boat snagged a gigantic black marlin. Photos of the ordeal posted to Facebook make it seem as though the monstrous fish sank the boat as it was being reeled aboard.

According to Marlin Magazine, which obtained the epic pics and uploaded them to Facebook, the fish didn’t actually play a role in sinking the boat, though the boat did eventually end up on the bottom of the ocean. Instead, the captain had been “backing down” on the fish, a practice where the boat is put in reverse to help reel in line. A large wave overtook the stern, upsetting the captain’s balance, which caused him to slip backwards and accidentally hit the throttle into full reverse. This rapid movement in reverse ended up swamping the yacht and sinking it.

A person claiming to be a spokesman for the boat manufacturer, Strike Yachts, took to boating forum The Hull Truth to offer a similar take on the incident:

Direct from Panama I was told that the sea conditions were not as calm as they seem to be in the pictures and the Captain was an experienced Captain. The seas were full of big swells and large waves. A large wave came over the transom and with the anglers all being in the starboard corner the boat leaned… the Captain in the tower lost his footing [and] while the boat was still in reverse another wave came over the transom. At this time, the captain slipped and, believed to still have his hand on the throttle, putting the boat in full reverse burying the transom into the next waves and swells.

Black marlin have a reputation for being among of the largest, most difficult fish to catch. The BBC has labeled the creature, which can weigh as much as 2,000 pounds, the “fastest fish on the planet.” Indeed, black marlin can reach a top speed of 80 mph.

No one aboard the boat was harmed, and they were soon rescued by the same boat that captured the event on camera. As for the fish, that has to be one happy marlin. The one that got away.
